Sex 2.0 2009 post roundup
A big “thank you!” to all the attendees who took the time record a session and upload media or do a writeup. If I’ve left out a post, please leave a comment and I’ll update the post. There were many people who couldn’t attend, so there were reqeusts that media be posted. Next time, we’ll be more proactive in organizing volunteers to record and transcribe sessions.

Anyone caught using audio of video recording equipmentnt without the express permission of those being recorded may be asked to leave the event.
Liveblogging and Twitter
I’ve tried to assemble a list of attendees who will be live blogging or using Twitter. These names were collected either through the Google Group or by using Twitter search. You’ll either want to follow them because 1) you’re attending and it’ll help you keep track of where people are or 2) you’re not attending and want to follow the conference by following them.
Last year, I did a post on my blog listing all the speakers on Twitter (18). This year, many attendees are on Twitter! We’re also going to have a live Twitter feed on the front page, so if you are twittering, please make sure you use the #sex20 hashtag, otherwise it won’t show up in the feed. If you want to understand what Twitter is, I suggest this video.
If I have not listed you, my apologies for having left you off. Please add your name and link in the comments and I’ll update the list. Thank you!

Session Recorders Needed
I’ve set up a page in the Google Group to organize recording for each of the sessions. The goal of a session recorder is to form a summary of what was discussed during a session. There’s been a lot of interest and people who can’t attend have asked that writeups or some sort of media be made available.
Session Leaders
Please indicate the all permitted methods of recording a session (i.e. for certain sessions, participants may not want to be on video):
-Video recording
-Audio recording
-Live blog/writeup
Twitter isn’t an acceptable method of recording the session, because from what my searches show, all the Twitters from last year’s conference aren’t indexed. The goal is to have a file or document that can either be uploaded to this site (Files section) or linked to from another site. If it’s video or audio recording, please list whether you can provide the equipment.
Volunteers
Please list your name and email address, so that the session leader can get in touch with you after the session to discuss how the session writeup/video/audio will be formatted, written up, and where it will be uploaded or linked to.
Reminder: Bound, Not Gagged Happy Hour, Thursday, May 7th
The Desiree Alliance is pleased to invite you to attend a happy hour to support our web blog project, BoundNotGagged.com
BoundnotGagged.com is a place for sex workers to respond to the way that we’re portrayed in the media and the way that sexist laws are used to undermine our rights. It is one way that we respond to the injustice and hypocrisy that keeps sex workers’ voices muted and faces hidden. Sex workers may be forced into hiding, but we refuse to be silent.
The Desiree Alliance is committed to creating space and campaigns that address self-identified needs of sex workers. We are proud to sponsor this project to provide a platform where sex workers can speak for ourselves.
Please join us in Washington DC for our first ever meet-up with some of the blog contributors and other friends and allies for sex workers rights.
When: May 7th, 2009, 5-7pm
Where:
Madam’s Organ
Soul Food Restaurant & Blues Bar
2461 18th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20009
This happy hour is a pre-event hosted in conjunction with Sex 2.0, focusing on the intersection of social media, feminism, and sexuality. BoundNotgagged.com is a proud sponsor of the second annual Sex 2.0 “un”-conference on May 9th, 2009 in Washington DC.
Service project benefiting HIPS
This year we are organizing a small service project for Sex 2.0 attendees to participate in. Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive (HIPS) will be participating in the conference this year and are an excellent organization that provide much needed support to sex workers in the Washington D.C. area. Their outreach efforts serve over 8,000 sex workers per year with services such as education and counseling; emergency shelter; and distribution of safety materials, clothing, food, and personal items.
HIPS always needs donations of personal care items such as lotion, shampoo, and mouthwash. Incidentally, our conference this year is located in a hotel and our hotel rooms will be coming with handy sample sizes of these items. So, as a simple service project, we’ll be collecting donations of your hotel toiletries for HIPS so that they can be distributed to sex workers in need of them. While this project is focusing on the things we can swipe from our hotel rooms, we’ll also collect other items that HIPS can use including:
- Any new and unused personal care item
- Clothing
- Cash donations
Donation boxes will be available at the Porn and Brownies event on Friday evening, at the registration table the day of the conference, and at brunch on Sunday. Thank you for taking the time to participate in Sex 2.0. Please consider embodying the spirit of the conference by making a donation of a personal care item for HIPS.
Thanks to Ellie Lumpesse, who suggested this.

The second Sex 2.0 to focus on the intersection of social media, feminism and sexuality
WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 27, 2009. Now in our second year, Sex 2.0, a one-day unconference, will take place on May 9, 2009 in Washington, D.C. Sex 2.0 will focus on the intersection of social media, feminism, and sexuality. How is social media enabling people to learn, grow, and connect sexually? How is sexual expression tied to social activism? Does the concept of transparency online offer new opportunities or present new roadblocks — or both? Sex 2.0 is an unconference, which means that sessions will be informal conversations organized by people attending the event. Session leaders with some knowledge in a subject area facilitate conversations among the participants.
Sessions will include: “Internet Advocacy for Sexual Freedom” with Ricci Joy Levy of the Woodhull Foundation; “Polyamory in Media’s Spotlight” with Anita Wagner; “Craigslist Red, Craigslist Blue: Why we should dismantle the “internet red light district” with Melissa Gira Grant and Joanne McNeill; “Kick Ass Twitter Apps” with Cunning Minx; “Revenge Porn” with Maria Diaz; and “Sex Writing Beyond Erotica, Beyond Porn” with Jack Murnighan, Nerve.com editor-at-large. The keynote speaker will be Nikol Hasler, creator of the Midwest Teen Sex Show (http://midwestteensexshow.com). A complete list of sessions may be viewed at: http://sex20con.com/2009-schedule/sessions/
Sex 2.0 will be held in a Washington, D.C. hotel. (To ensure everyone’s privacy, location information will be email once you are registered). It will offer five conference rooms, a lounge (with free WiFi), vendor area as well as space for various sex-positive outreach groups to set up informational displays and tables.
The event is managed by volunteers and funded by sponsors. We are pleased to have SEXTOY.com as our presenting sponsor this year. SEXTOY.com has been focusing on building a relationship within the blogger community with the recent start-up of its sex toy reviewer program. SEXTOY.com is honored to be the official sponsor for Sex 2.0 and looks forward to a mutually rewarding relationship with the blogger Community. Two SEXTOY.com associates will be attending Sex 2.0 this year: Erik Van Riper and Domina Doll; who both look forward to meeting everyone, attending the talks and participating in discussions. Sex 2.0 is also pleased to have community sponsor Bound Not Gagged (www.boundnotgagged.com), hospitality sponsor Kimberleecline.com and technology sponsor PosAlt.com supporting this years conference.
While the event itself is on Saturday, May 9, there are participant-organized meetups, outings, and parties being planned for Friday night and Saturday evening, as well as a Sunday brunch. For more information, visit the Sex 2.0 website at www.sex20con.com or follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/sex20con.
